At 1st Carrickfergus, our Explorer Unit takes Scouting to new heights – literally. As Air Scouts, we combine all the thrill of traditional Scouting with a special focus on aviation, adventure, and pushing boundaries.
Open to young people aged 14 to 18, Explorers are all about independence, leadership, and getting stuck into big challenges. From night hikes to navigation, survival skills to flying experiences, Explorers take what they’ve learned in previous sections and launch it to the next level.
But being an Air Scout adds something extra – we delve into the world of aeronautics, aircraft recognition, map reading for pilots, and even the occasional flight simulator or flying day. Whether it's on the ground or in the skies, there’s always something exciting ahead.
Explorers also take on real responsibility – planning their own activities, organising camps, volunteering in the community, and working towards top awards like the Duke of Edinburgh and the King’s Scout Award.
So if you're up for an adventure that mixes teamwork, leadership, and a hint of aviation magic – the skies (and beyond) are calling!

Our Explorer Air Scouts wear a smart, distinctive uniform that reflects their role as the oldest section in the Scout family and their connection to the skies.
The Explorer (Air Scout) uniform includes:
A light blue Air Scout shirt or blouse
Navy blue activity trousers
A neckerchief and woggle – these are provided when you join
